Whether it’s the original choice or an alternative, every route plan should include information with regards to travel times, delays, fueling locations etc. It’s important to think about every possible factor when planning the route. Not having a stringent refueling plan can balloon transportation costs, as drivers would be forced to go out of their way to choose fueling stations that are less than ideal or overpriced increasing costs for machinery traders.
KNOW THE WEATHER
It doesn’t matter whether drivers use their phones or listen to the radio but they should always have an update on the local weather and any upcoming changes. The forecast should be referenced and recorded before the drive as well. Any changes should also be monitored throughout the journey. For example, some loads cannot be exposed to inclement weather, so it’s important in such cases to avoid rainy, overcast or muggy areas.
USE THE RIGHT SECUREMENT
When hauling loads of any size, it’s vital to keep the pieces, items or components locked down and secured. There are many different types of fastening devices available ranging from ropes and straps to friction mats and binders. They’re not interchangeable and sometimes some devices are not ideal for certain loads or gear. It’s up to the drivers to have knowledge which securement tools are best for a particular load as using the wrong devices can have major repercussions and may lead to the heavy load falling off the trailer or transport vehicle.
REVIEW THE RISKS OF INATTENTION
Carriers are responsible for ensuring that drivers take care of the loads they are transporting and a driver may be found liable if they cause injury or damage by violating this duty. Therefore, drivers must continuously maintain a state of awareness and attention to avoid violating the duty of care. Any sort of inattention is dangerous and can lead to liability issues. The consequences of inattention involve both injuries and financial losses that result from negligence, wrongful death lawsuits filed by family members who have lost loved ones because of a negligent driver’s actions and much more.
